East Timor Cries For Peace.
12th September 1999

DOM has heard the pleas for independence from the peaceful peoples of East Timor and expects these pleas to turn to reality with the assistance of the world community.

DOM citizens are appalled by the massacres of innocent men, women and children by selfish frightened militia, guerillas and gangsters afraid of change and their reluctance to live in peace with their brothers and sisters.

These barbaric acts against the peaceful people of East Timor are un-called for and cannot be tolerated. No person deserves to be treated to such violence. It's not only the killing of religious men and women that DOM citizens are concerned about, but all the people of East Timor.

DOM and the world community will not tolerate this extermination. Such injustice is against humanity.

The people of East Timor clearly and without a doubt want to lead a simple life, outside the dominance of a foreign power and want to be free to decide the best interest for their family and children.

The United Nations aided referendum clearly showed an overwhelming support for independence. The people have issued a de-facto declaration of sovereignty through their vote in the referendum.

Indonesia recognized the free and fair ballot for self-determination, yet their answer to this was to ignore their desire to live in peace. Onslaught and destruction by the militia began by burning homes, churches and other buildings and thereafter looting by the Indonesian army determined to extinguish the aspirations and hopes of the people.

Indonesia should honour the decision of the East Timorese people for self-determination and independent sovereignty and immediately pull out from East Timor.

DOM supports every effort for a peace keeping force, and the world cannot delay humanitarian action to intervene and stop these crimes against humanity.

Time is ripe for action from the Permanent Members of the Untied Nations Security Council, not just words of sympathy. The East Timorese people need to be protected against further atrocities until they can begin to self govern. As a non-self governing territory following the vote for independence, the people are purposefully being hindered in their desire to become self-governing.

The East Timorese people voted for independence and are now faced with forced deportation and are being killed and raped for their God given right for self-determination.

Does the UN High Commission for Refugees really want another Kosovo ?

The people of East Timor have showed extraordinary courage and resilience over 24 years of suffering from forced occupation. They continue to suffer and have shown that they will not allow themselves to be exterminated and robbed of their freedom. Human rights are crucial to any peoples and the flame of resistance and self-determination continue to burn in the hearts and minds of the East Timorese people perpetually.

All that is required now is for the people to be left in peace. They have already claimed their status as free men and women and expressed a desire to be self-governing.

Slobodan Milosevic failed to hear the cries of the Kosovo people and has suffered and lost the spiritual war. France realized its error and stopped nuclear testing in the Pacific ahead of schedule. Now it is time for Indonesia to hear the cries for peace.

DOM has pre-recognized East Timor as an independent state free to govern itself and that the "pre-recognition" will become formal and official recognition upon East Timor and DOM exchanging Ambassadors.

Accordingly, "DOM now calls on the Indonesian military and their paramilitary guerillas to ; immediately cease and desist in violence and terror ; to forthwith retreat from East Timor ; and to allow the un-hindered passage and return of the displaced East Timorese to remnants of their homes and families."

Peace be with you.
