KING JAMES VERSION
GENESIS 44
GENESIS 44
1 Now Joseph ordered the steward of his house to fill his brothers' sacks with as much food as they could carry, and place each one's money in his sack's mouth.
This part of KING JAMES VERSION will be added later on.
2 He also ordered that his silver cup be placed in the sack's mouth of his youngest brother along with his food money. And he did according to Joseph's instructions.
.....
3 As soon as the morning dawned, the men were sent on their way with their donkeys.
.....
4 When they were gone not far from the city, Joseph said to his steward, "Quickly follow after the men, and when you overtake them, ask them, 'Why have you returned evil for good?
.....
5 'Is not this the cup from which my lord drinks, and wherein he practices hydromancy? In this you have done an evil act.'"
.....
6 So when he overtook them, he spoke to them as Joseph had instructed.
.....
7 They asked him, "Why does my lord speak these words? God forbid that your servants should have acted according to this accusation.
.....
8 "We even brought the money which we found in our sacks' mouths back from the land of Canaan; how could we then steal from your master's house either silver or gold?
.....
9 "With whomsoever of your servants it is found, let him die and let us also be your master's slaves."
.....
10 He replied, "But let it be according to this: he with whom it is found will be my master's slave, and the rest of you will be blameless."
.....
11 Then each man quickly put his sack on the ground and opened it.
.....
12 So he searched, beginning with the oldest and finishing with the youngest, and the cup was found in Benjamin's sack.
.....
13 With this they tore their clothes, and loaded every man his donkey, and returned to the city.
.....
14 Joseph was still at his house when Judah and his brothers arrived, and they fell before him on the ground^.
.....
15 Joseph said to them, "Why have you done this deed? Do you not realize that a man such as I can certainly perceive."
.....
16 So Judah cried out, "What will we say to our lord? How can we speak or how can we clear ourselves? God has exposed the iniquity of your servants, now we are my lord's slaves, not only he with whom the cup is found, but we also."
.....
17 Joseph responded, "God forbid that I should do so; but the man in whose hand the cup was found will be my servant, and as for the rest of you, return to your father in peace.
.....
18 Then Judah approached him, and said, "Oh my lord, let your servant kindly speak a word to you, and be not angry, for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.
.....
19 "My lord asked us if we have a father or a brother.
.....
20 "And we replied to my lord, 'We have an aged father and he has had a child in his advanced age, a little one, and his brother has passed away, so he alone is left of his late mother, and his father loves him.'
.....
21 "So you required your servants to bring him down to you, that you may see him personally.
.....
22 "And we answered, 'My lord, the lad cannot leave his father, for if he should leave, his father would die.'
.....
23 "And you declared to your servants, that unless our youngest brother came down with us, we could not see you again.
.....
24 "So when we returned to your servant, our father, we told him what you, our lord, said.
.....
25 "But our father directed us to go again and buy a little food.
.....
26 "And we said, 'We cannot go down to buy food if our youngest brother is not with us, for we cannot see the man unless our youngest brother is with us.'
.....
27 "So your servant my father said to us, 'You know that my wife brought forth two sons;
.....
28 "'One of them left me of which I declared: Surely he is ripped apart and I have not seen him since.
.....
29 "'And if you take this son also from me, and harm comes to him too, you will bring my gray head down to the grave in sorrow.'
.....
30 "Now therefore when I return to your servant my father, and the lad is not with us, since his life is bound up in the lad's life;
.....
31 "It will happen that when he sees that the lad is not with us, he will die; and your servants will have killed your servant our father with sorrow.
.....
32 "For your servant guaranteed the lad's safe conduct back to my father, saying, 'If I do not bring him back to you, then you can blame me forever.'
.....
33 "Now therefore, kindly let your servant abide as a slave for my lord instead of the lad, and allow the lad to return with his brothers.
.....
34 "For how can I return to my father, if the lad is not with me? Otherwise I must behold the anguish which will fall upon my father."
