THE MELCHIZEDEK BIBLE
KING JAMES VERSION
GENESIS 42
GENESIS 42
1 When Jacob heard that there was food in Egypt, Jacob said to his sons, "Why are you just looking at each other?"
This part of KING JAMES VERSION will be added later on.
2 He added, "Listen, I have heard that there is food in Egypt; get on down there to buy food for us so that we may survive."
.....
3 Now Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy food in Egypt.
.....
4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, Joseph's youngest brother with them, for he said, "Lest perhaps he falls into trouble."
.....
5 The sons of Israel went to buy food just as all the others who went down to Egypt, for the famine was throughout the land of Canaan.
.....
6 Since Joseph was the governor over the land, he was the one that sold to all the people of the land; so when Joseph's brothers came, they bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the earth^.
.....
7 When Joseph recognized his brothers, he acted as though he was a stranger, speaking harshly to them when he asked, "Where do you come from?" They replied, "From the land of Canaan to buy food."
.....
8 But Joseph's brothers did not recognize him, even though he knew them.
.....
9 Remembering the dreams which he had of them^, Joseph said to them, "You are spies; you have come to see the vulnerability of the land."
.....
10 They replied to him, "No, my lord, your servants have only come to buy food."
.....
11 "We all are the sons of one man; we are honest men, your servants are not spies."
.....
12 Replying, he said to them, "No, you have come to discover the vulnerability of the land."
.....
13 Then they said, "Your servants are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; the youngest son is still at home with our father, and one of the sons is gone."
.....
14 But Joseph stated to them, "You are exactly as I have said, you are spies;
.....
15 "You will be tested in this way: as certainly as Pharaoh lives, you will not leave unless your youngest brother comes here.
.....
16 "Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, and you will be kept in prison until your statement is verified to see if you are honest; or otherwise, as surely as Pharaoh lives, you are spies."
.....
17 So he placed all of them in custody together for three days.
.....
18 And on the third day, Joseph said to them, "This is what you may do to live, for I honor God:
.....
19 "If you are honest men, let one of your brothers be bound and abide in your own prison, then you may go and carry food for the famine of your abode.
.....
20 "But bring back your youngest brother to me, so that your words will be verified, then you will not die." And that is what they did.
.....
21 Then they reasoned among themselves, "We are actually guilty concerning our brother. When we saw the anguish on his face as he begged with us for his life, we would not listen; that is why this distress has come upon us. "
.....
22 Now Reuben said to them, "I told you not to harm the child, but you would not listen. Now therefore, this sin must be accounted for."
.....
23 But they did not know that Joseph understood their language because he spoke to them through an interpreter.
.....
24 Thereupon Joseph turned away from them as he wept. But when he returned to commune with them, he took Simeon from them and they watched while he was bound before their very eyes.
.....
25 Then Joseph ordered their sacks be filled with food and that every man's money be returned to his sack. Also he gave them provisions for their trip, and that is what was done for them.
.....
26 So they loaded their donkeys with the food and departed from there.
.....
27 When one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food at the inn, he saw his money in the neck of the sack, for it was in the sack's mouth.
.....
28 And he declared to his brothers, "My money is returned, and look, it is even in my sack." So their hearts sank as they were frightened, saying among themselves, "What has God done to us?"
.....
29 When they returned to their father, Jacob, in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying,
.....
30 "The man, who is the lord of that land, spoke sharply to us, and accused us of spying out the country.
.....
31 "But we said to him, 'We are honest men, we are not spies.
.....
32 "'We are twelve brothers, sons of the same father, one of us has passed away, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.'
.....
33 "Then the man, the lord of that country, said to us, 'Here is how I will know if you are honest men: you will leave one of your brothers here with me, and take food for your famine in you households, and leave;
.....
34 "'But bring back your youngest brother to me so I can know if you are spies or if you are honest men; if I find you are honest men, I will return your brother to you, and you may move about freely in the land.'"
.....
35 And as they emptied their sacks, they found that everyone's bundle of money was in his sack; and when both they and their father saw the bundles of money, they became afraid.
.....
36 Jacob their father, declared, "You have deprived me of my children; Joseph is gone, and Simeon is gone, and now you want to take Benjamin away too; it is all against me.
.....
37 Then Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "Kill my two sons if I fail to bring him back to you; deliver him to my care, and I will bring him to you again."
.....
38 He said, "My son will not go down with you, for his brother is no doubt dead, leaving him alone; if harm comes to him on the trip you propose, then will you bring my gray head down in sorrow to the grave."
