KING JAMES VERSION
GENESIS 38
GENESIS 38
1 It happened that Judah fell from his fathers' standard, and dwelled with a man of Adullam, whose name was Hirah.
This part of KING JAMES VERSION will be added later on.
2 There is where Judah met a daughter of a Canaanite, whose name was Shuah, and he married her making her his wife.
.....
3 Thereafter she conceived and gave birth to a son whom Judah named Err.
.....
4 And she conceived again and gave birth to another son, and she named him Onan.
.....
5 Yet again she conceived, and gave birth to a third son, and she named him Shelah, and he was born at Chezib where she had him.
.....
6 Now Judah took for Err, his firstborn, a wife whose name was Tamar, to marry.
.....
7 But Err, Judah's firstborn, was erroneous in the sight of Truth, and divine Truth annihilated his false belief of life.
.....
8 Then Judah told Onan, "Marry your brother's wife^ and have her to raise children to your brother."
.....
9 But since Onan knew the children would not be his, when he was with his brother's wife, he prevented any conception so that he would not have children for his brother.
.....
10 Now the act which he did was not acceptable to its principle, thereupon his belief of life was also annihilated.
.....
11 Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow at your father's house until my son Shelah is grown," for he added, "Lest perhaps he may die also, as his brothers did." So Tamar dwelt in her father's house.
.....
12 After some time, the daughter of Shuah, Judah's wife, died. When Judah's grief was comforted, he went up to his sheepshearers at Timnath with his friend Hirah, the Adullamite.
.....
13 It was told to Tamar that her father-in-law was to go up to Timnath to sheer his sheep.
.....
14 So she took off her widow's garments, covered herself with a veil and disguised herself, sitting in an open place which is on the way to Timnath, for she saw that Shelah was not given in marriage to her when he was grown.
.....
15 But when Judah saw her, he thought she was an harlot^ because she had disguised her face.
.....
16 So he stopped to see her by the roadside and asked her to kindly let him be with her, for he did not know she was his daughter-in-law. And she asked, "What will you give me, that you may be with me?"
.....
17 He replied, "I will send you a young goat from the flock." Then she asked, "What will you leave with me as a pledge until you send it?"
.....
18 So he asked, "What pledge can I give you?" She replied, "Your signet, and its chains, and your staff that is in your hand." Then he gave them to her as a pledge, and lay with her, and she did conceive by him.
.....
19 Thereafter she left there and put aside her veil to put on the garments of widowhood again.
.....
20 But when Judah sent her the young goat by his friend the Adullamite, so that she could return his pledge to him, she could not be found.
.....
21 Thereupon he asked the men of that place, "Where is the harlot that was openly by the way side? " But they replied, "There was no harlot in this place."
.....
22 So he returned to Judah and said, "I cannot find her and also the men of the place stated that there was no harlot there."
.....
23 Judah said, "Let her keep my pledge for fear that I will be shamed, seeing that I sent her this young goat and she cannot be found."
.....
24 About three months later, it was told Judah that his daughter-in-law had played the harlot, and moreover she is with child by whoredom. So Judah asserted, "Bring her out and let her die by fire."
.....
25 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, "I am with child by the man who owns these, please discern whose these are, the signet and its chains, and the staff."
.....
26 So Judah acknowledged them, saying, "She has been more righteous than I because I did not give her to Shelah my son, according to the promise I had made her." But he did not lay with her again.
.....
27 At the time of her travail, she was found to have twins in her womb.
.....
28 And as she travailed, one put out his hand, so the midwife took it and bound upon his hand a scarlet thread, saying, "This one came out first."
.....
29 It happened that as he drew back his hand, that his brother came out, and she said, "How have you broken out? This breach marks your nature"; Therefore his name was called Pharez.
.....
30 Afterward his brother, that had the scarlet thread upon his hand, was born. He was named Zarah.
