THE MELCHIZEDEK BIBLE
KING JAMES VERSION
GENESIS 37
GENESIS 37
1 Jacob dwelt in that land wherein the state of thought had been unfamiliar to his father - the land of the Canaanities.
This part of KING JAMES VERSION will be added later on.
2 This is the history of Jacob. At the age of seventeen Joseph was feeding the flock with his brothers - the lad was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives. After that Joseph brought a report of their evil behavior to Jacob.
.....
3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children because he was the son of his advanced years, so he made for him a many colored coat of the type worn only by those of distinction.
.....
4 When his brothers saw that their father respected him more than all the others, they resented him and could only speak bitterly to him.
.....
5 Now Joseph beheld a vision which he related to his brothers, and they resented him even more for it.
.....
6 But he requested that they kindly listen to his vision which he related, saying,
.....
7 "For, behold, we were securing the fruit of our labor in the field of mental work, and, lo, my work was outstanding and also was righteous, and, behold, your work did not suffice and deferred to my work."
.....
8 But his brothers retorted, "Will you indeed reign over us, or will you indeed have dominion over us?" So they hated him even more for his vision and for its implication.
.....
9 He yet beheld another vision and he also related it to his brothers, saying, "I have beheld another vision, and behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me."
.....
10 Again he related it to his father and to his brothers, and his father rebuked him, telling him, "What is this vision that you have had? Will I, your mother, and your brothers, honor you?"
.....
11 Yet his brothers envied him, but his father grasped the vision's meaning.
.....
12 Then his brothers went to graze their father's flock near Shechem.
.....
13 And Israel asked Joseph, "Are not your brothers grazing the flock in Shechem? Look, I will send you to them." He replied to him, "Here I am to serve you."
.....
14 So he said to him, "Please go to see whether it is well with your brothers, and well with the flocks, and bring back news of them." So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
.....
15 And he encountered a certain kind of man when he was wandering in the field, who asked him, "What are you seeking?"
.....
16 He replied, "I am seeking my brothers; please tell me where do they graze their flocks?"
.....
17 And the answer was that they have departed from their father's field of endeavor, for they have been heard to say, "Let us work in Dothan," so Joseph went after his brothers to find them at work in Dothan.
.....
18 When they saw him far from them, even before he approached near, they conspired to kill him.
.....
19 And they said to each other, "Look, the visionary is coming.
.....
20 "Now let us therefore kill him, and throw him into some pit, and we will say, 'Some evil beast has devoured him.' then we will see what becomes of his visions.'"
.....
21 But when Reuben heard about it, he delivered him out of their control, as he urged them not to kill him.
.....
22 So Reuben told them, "Shed no blood, but rather throw him into to this pit that is in the wilderness, and do not harm him," so that he might return to rescue him and deliver him back to his father.
.....
23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him out of his coat of many colors which he was wearing.
.....
24 Then they took him and threw him into an empty pit which had no water.
.....
25 When they sat down to eat, they sighted a company of Ishmeelites traveling down to Egypt from Gilead with their camels bearing spice, balm and myrrh.
.....
26 Thereupon Judah said to his brothers, "How do we profit if we kill our brother and attempt to hide the fact?
.....
27 "Now let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let us not harm him, for he is our brother and of our own flesh." And his brothers were content with that idea.
.....
28 So when Midianite merchantmen passed by there, they lifted Joseph up out of the pit to sell him to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver. Then Joseph was brought into Egypt.
.....
29 When Reuben returned to the pit, he saw that Joseph was not in it. At once he was grieved and rent his clothes.
.....
30 So when he returned to his brothers, he exclaimed, "The youth is gone; and I, now where can I turn?"
.....
31 Then they killed a goat and dipped Joseph's coat in the blood;
.....
32 Thereafter they brought the coat of many colors to their father and inquired, "We have found this coat so that you may know now if it is or is not your son's."
.....
33 When he recognized it, he replied, "It is my son's coat; an evil animal must have devoured him; Joseph is no doubt torn to pieces."
.....
34 Then Jacob rent his clothes and put on sackcloth, mourning considerably for his son.
.....
35 All his sons and all his daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted; and he stated, "I will mourn for my son until I join the departed^." So his father wept for him.
.....
36 And Joseph was sold by the Midianites in Egypt to Potiphar, one of Pharaoh's officials and captain of his guard.
