| 1 Spirituality dawned upon Abraham's thought in
the plains of Mamre as he was reposed receptive in an
open frame of mind strengthened by the irradiance of
Life. |
And the LORD appeared unto
him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door
in the heat of the day; |
| 2 Lifting up to divine perception, he looked,
and, lo, three men were in support of him^; and when he
perceived them, he quickly met them with his thought
open, submitting himself toward the underlying reality. |
And he lift up his eyes and
looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw
them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed
himself toward the ground, |
| 3 He said to one of them, "My master, if
now I have found favour in your sight, kindly do not pass
your servant by; |
And said, My LORD, if now I
have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray
thee, from thy servant: |
| 4 "Please allow some water to be fetched to
cleanse your feet, refreshing yourselves and rest under
this tree. |
Let a little water, I pray
you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves
under the tree: |
| 5 "Also let me have something prepared to
eat, so your hearts may be comforted; after that, now
that you have come to your servant, you may continue
on," and they replied, "So be it as you have
said." |
And I will fetch a morsel of
bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall
pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And
they said, So do, as thou hast said. |
| 6 At once Abraham hurried to Sarah in her tent
and asked her, "Quickly take some fine flour and
knead it to bake bread." |
And Abraham hastened into
the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three
measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the
hearth. |
| 7 Then Abraham ran to the herd and picked out a
choice and tender calf for a servant to prepare it for
them. |
And Abraham ran unto the
herd, and fetcht a calf tender and good, and gave it unto
a young man; and he hasted to dress it. |
| 8 With some curds and milk, he set the prepared
calf before them. As they were eating, he stood by them
under the tree. |
And he took butter, and
milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it
before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and
they did eat. |
| 9 Then they asked him, "Where is Sarah your
wife?" He replied, "She remains in the
tent." |
And they said unto him,
Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the
tent. |
| 10 Thereupon the master said, "I will
certainly return to you according to the belief of life;
and, lo, Sarah your wife will have a son." When
Sarah discerned this concept at the threshold of her
tent, her thinking was not equal to it. |
And he said, I will
certainly return unto thee according to the time of life;
and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard
it in the tent door, which was behind him. |
| 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well
advanced in years, and it ceased to be with Sarah
according to the manner of women who can bare children. |
Now Abraham and Sarah were
old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with
Sarah after the manner of women. |
| 12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herself,
saying, "After I have grown old will I have this
pleasure, my husband being old also?" |
Therefore Sarah laughed
within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have
pleasure, my lord being old also? |
| 13 And the master said unto Abraham,
"Wherefore did Sarah laugh saying, 'Will I surely
have a child in my advanced age?' |
And the LORD said unto
Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a
surety bear a child, which am old? |
| 14 "Is anything too hard for infinite Mind?
At the time appointed I will return to you according to
the period of gestation, when Sarah will have a
son." |
Is any thing too hard for
the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee,
according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a
son. |
| 15 But Sarah denied it, saying, "I did not
laugh"; for she was afraid. Yet he said, "Nay;
nevertheless, you did laugh." |
Then Sarah denied, saying, I
laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but
thou didst laugh. |
| 16 When the men rose up even higher from thence,
they turned their attention to Sodom. Abraham went with
them to bring them on the way. |
And the men rose up from
thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with
them to bring them on the way. |
| 17 And the master thought, "Should I
conceal from Abraham that thing which will be done, |
And the LORD said, Shall I
hide from Abraham that thing which I do; |
| 18 "Seeing that Abraham's understanding
will lead to a great and mighty family, and all who
represent this family in the earth will be blessed by it?
|
Seeing that Abraham shall
surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the
nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? |
| 19 "For I know him, that he will instruct
his children and his household after him, and they will
obey and keep the way of the Lord, doing according to the
divine will, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham that
which has been promised to him." |
For I know him, that he will
command his children and his household after him, and
they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and
judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which
he hath spoken of him. |
| 20 And the master said, "Because the
anguish of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their
sin is very grievous; |
And the LORD said, Because
the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their
sin is very grievous; |
| 21 "I will go now to mediate, and see
whether they have done altogether according to the cry of
it, which is known to me, and if not I will know." |
I will go down now, and see
whether they have done altogether according to the cry of
it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know. |
| 22 Then the men turned their attention from
thence, and directed it toward Sodom, but the master
remained standing before Abraham. |
And the men turned their
faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham
stood yet before the LORD. |
| 23 Drawing near, Abraham said, "Will the
righteous also be destroyed with the wicked? |
And Abraham drew near, and
said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the
wicked? |
| 24 "Perhaps there are fifty righteous ones
within the city; will they also be destroyed and the
place not be spared for the fifty righteous that are
dwelling there? |
Peradventure there be fifty
righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not
spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? |
| 25 "That is far from Principle to do so -
to slay the righteous with the wicked, and that the
righteous should be treated like the wicked, that is far
from Principle. Will not the Judge of all the earth do
what is right?" |
That be far from thee to do
after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked:
and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be
far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do
right? |
| 26 The master replied, "If there are found
in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then the entire
place will be spared for their sakes." |
And the LORD said, If I find
in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will
spare all the place for their sakes. |
| 27 Abraham answered and said, "Behold now,
I, which am but dust and ashes, have taken upon me to
speak to the master of the Lord; |
And Abraham answered and
said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the
LORD, which am but dust and ashes: |
| 28 "Perhaps there will lack five of the
fifty righteous; will all the city be destroyed for lack
of five?" And he replied, "If forty five are
found, it will not be destroyed." |
Peradventure there shall
lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all
the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there
forty and five, I will not destroy it. |
| 29 Abraham spoke to him yet again, asking,
"Perhaps if forty righteous are found there?"
The master responded, "It will not be destroyed for
forty's sake." |
And he spake unto him yet
again, and said, Peradventure there shall be forty found
there. And he said, I will not do it for forty's sake. |
| 30 Then Abraham said to him, "Oh, let not
the master of the Lord be displeased with me, and I will
inquire once more: Perhaps if thirty are found
there?" And he said, "It will not be done if
thirty are found there." |
And he said unto him, Oh let
not the LORD be angry, and I will speak: Peradventure
there shall thirty be found there. And he said, I will
not do it, if I find thirty there. |
| 31 Again Abraham said, "Behold now, I have
taken it upon myself to speak to the master of the Lord,
perhaps if twenty are found there." And he replied,
"It will not be destroyed for twenty's sake." |
And he said, Oh let not the
LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once:
Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I
will not destroy it for ten's sake. |
| 32 And Abraham said, "Oh let not the master
of the Lord be displeased, and I will speak to you but
once more; perhaps if ten are to be found there."
And he said, "It will not be destroyed for ten's
sake." |
And he said, Oh let not the
LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once:
Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I
will not destroy it for ten's sake. |
| 33 Then the master of the Lord continued on his
way, as soon as he had quit communing with Abraham, and
Abraham returned to his place. |
And the LORD went his way,
as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and
Abraham returned unto his place. |
